Although the Catholic presence in the community traces its beginnings back to the 1850’s, the first Church of St. Mary of the Lake dates from 1935. Originally located at the junction of County Road 15 and 73, it was dedicated on September 8, 1935, during the pastorate of its founding pastor, Fr. Nicholas Finn.
By the mid-1950’s, with the rapid, postwar growth of the western suburbs, the parish had outgrown its space. Between 1961 and 1964, under Fr. Anthony Louis, a church, school, rectory, and convent were built at the present location, just a few blocks southwest of the original church site. The parish school, staffed by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, operated until 1968.
In 1997, under the leadership of Fr. Bryan O’Rourke, the interior of the church was refurbished and stained glass windows and air-conditioning were added.
St. Mary of the Lake places emphasis on a good worship experience and a welcoming environment. Clergy, staff and volunteer leadership have worked to build community through such efforts as coffee after Sunday Masses and community night dinners. The parish stresses pre-school through 9th grade religious education programming. St. Mary's has a long history of commitment to social ministry, providing numerous and varied opportunities for service both within the parish and to the broader community.
After 21 years of service to St. Mary of the Lake Fr. Lybarger retired on June 30, 2022. On July 1st we welcomed our current pastor, Fr. Andrew Zipp, to our parish.
St. Mary of the Lake has 1075 registered families, 2788 parishioners from many different school districts and neighborhoods, in 57 zip codes.
