LECTIO DIVINA is Latin for spiritual reading. It is an ancient way of praying with Sacred Scripture or another written text. There are four movements to lectio divina: lectio, meditatio, oratio, and contemplatio. [Operatio is the fruit which comes forth from this spiritual exercise...faithful witness in daily life.]
Lectio
Reading the Scripture: Begin by prayerfully reading the passage of Scripture. Lectio reading is a reverential and prayerful listening that accompanies the reading. Read slowly and attentively, honing in on the word or phrase that attracts you, draws you; the words with which God is inviting you to rest.
Meditatio
Reflecting on the Meaning: Trusting that the Holy Spirit has led you to a place in the text where you may encounter the Lord, now stay and meditate. Open your heart to receive the Word who speaks to you. You may choose to repeat the words slowly and gently allowing them to soak in and penetrate all that you are. Allow the Lord to use these words to enter and speak to your heart, to seep into your inmost being.
Oratio
Responding through Prayer: ORATIO means prayer. Speak to the Lord about that Scripture passage. Tell God all that you are experiencing, including your thoughts feelings, and desires. In this time of prayer be open and honest with God.
Contemplatio
Resting in God: Remain in silence and receive God’s love. When you become aware of God’s love for you, of God's presence, then slow down to simply receive. Words are not necessary. Contemplation is the gift of God giving God’s self to you.
The Risen Jesus said, "Listen! I am standing at the door knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you" (Revelation 3:20)
